Epic Public School‘s chess tournament was a grand success! 🏆 Students showcased their strategic skills, sportsmanship, and talent, with winners emerging in two categories.

This quote by P.K. Subban emphasizes the game of chess, which originated as Chaturanga in medieval India. This game is celebrated all around the world today. Tournaments and championships take place at many places nowadays to promote the spirit of the game.
One such notable tournament took place in Epic Public School, Cooch Behar on 20th march, 2026.
It took place in the Junior campus of the school which is located in Debibari from 10:30 am. The competition was divided into two categories – Classes 3 and 4(Group A) and Classes 5 and 9(Group B).
There were 4 rounds in total for both the two category students. The tournament type was based on the Swiss-System. The Chief arbiter of the contest was Surajit Saha along with the Deputy Chief arbiter as Dipankar De Sarkar. The students played confidently and there was a sense of sportsmanship in all of them.

In the (Group A) category, Sanav Roy occupied the 3rd Position. Pratyay De was the runners-up after the tough finals. Finally, Sounak Dey emerged as the champion of the (Group A) category.


The (Group B) category had very intense matches, with an eye-catching final. Here, Anjishnu Barman was the 2nd runners-up. The fiercest match of the tournament took place between the two finalists, Shreejit Jha and Papon Mitra, where Shreejit Jha achieved the runners-up position and Papon Mitra emerged as the champion of the tournament.
The students lifted the spirit of sportsmanship and were competitive throughout the tournament. The Director of the school said, “Chess is such a game which should be included in every school’s syllabus because chess improves the mental health and concentration level of students. It is not just a game; it helps children to develop their minds.”. The chief arbiter, Surajit Saha, and other organisers praised the initiative taken by Epic Public School, that such an initiative should be taken by other schools also, and expressed their happiness of coming to Cooch Behar and watching such interesting games.
Also, a special highlight of the whole event took place, when the oldest chess player of Cooch Behar, Dipankar De Sarkar was so impressed by one of the students, that he had taken special initiative to train the student.
The whole tournament was enjoyed by many and many new talents were showcased that day. Initiatives like this will act as agents to find hidden talents in the students and ensure a better future for the whole country.
