Dear Students,
Did you know that the 16th of May is celebrated as ‘National Do Something Good for Your Neighbour Day’ in the USA? This day encourages acts of kindness and strengthens community bonds by promoting neighbourly interactions.
Of course, in India, showing gratitude and interacting with our neighbours is an integral part of our daily culture. But in the USA, it becomes important to celebrate such a day to raise awareness and encourage gratitude in the community.
Now, let me share with you some historical events associated with the 16th of May…
Did you know that it was on the 16th of May, 1527, when Florence became a republic? Now, the question is—where is Florence? It is the capital city of the Firenze province and the Tuscany region of present-day Italy. It is home to many masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture. Florence was incorporated into Italy only in 1861 and even served as the capital of Italy for a brief period in 1871. Can you tell me the capital city of Italy now? Yes, you are correct—it is Rome.

It was again on the 16th of May, 1689, when the famous Japanese poet Matsuo Bashō left Edo on his epic, 150-day journey to Honshū Island in Japan. He recorded his experiences in the literary masterpiece “Oku no Hosomichi” (The Narrow Road to the Deep North).

Students, we now live in a free world with equal rights for all. But there was a time when tyrannical landlords and rulers captured men and women, turning them into slaves—kept in chains and forced to work without wages. However, it was on this day in 1792 that Denmark abolished the slave trade. France followed by abolishing slavery in 1794.

Many of you enjoy visiting coffee shops these days. But did you know it was on the 16th of May, 1884, that Italian inventor Angelo Moriondo received a patent for the first espresso machine? So, the next time you sip your coffee, don’t forget to thank Mr Moriondo!

Again, it was on the 16th of May, 1959, that the famous Triton Fountain in Valletta, Malta, was turned on for the first time.

Students, do you know that it was on this day in 1960 when Theodore Maiman conducted the first successful laser operation? Since then, this day has been celebrated as the International Day of Light. Today, laser technology is widely used in medical science.

India achieved independence in 1947, but did you know that Sikkim remained an independent kingdom until 1975? It was on the 16th of May that Sikkim officially became a part of the Republic of India.

Until tomorrow Bye Bye.
