Discover the fascinating historical events of 3rd June — from the fall of the Maratha Confederacy in 1818, to Rabindranath Tagore receiving knighthood in 1915, and the announcement of India’s Partition in 1947. A child-friendly journey through India’s past!
Dear Students,
Hop into our time-travelling classroom, because today – 3rd June – is bursting with important moments from India’s past! From Maratha and British battles to a Nobel Prize-winning Rabindranath Tagore and the painful partition of a India – this date has it all!
A long time ago, on June 3, 1769, something very special happened in the sky! First, people on the island of Tahiti watched a rare event called the transit of Venus. That’s when the planet Venus slowly moved across the face of the Sun, like a tiny black dot.
Then, just five hours later, there was a total solar eclipse, when the Moon covered the Sun completely, turning day into night for a short while. It was the shortest time ever between these two amazing sky shows!
This day was super important for scientists, because it helped them figure out how far the Earth is from the Sun. That distance is called the astronomical unit, and it helps us understand the size of our solar system!

🎯 1818 – The End of the Peshwas!
Imagine this: majestic horses galloping, swords clashing, and Maratha warriors defending their land. This was the scene during the Third Anglo-Maratha War!
But on 3rd June 1818, everything changed. Peshwa Baji Rao II, the leader of the mighty Maratha Confederacy, surrendered to the British East India Company. With that, the Maratha rule officially ended, and the British tightened their grip on India.

🏅 1915 – Tagore Becomes “Sir”!
You’ve heard of Rabindranath Tagore, right? The man with the magical pen who gave us “Jana Gana Mana” and the Nobel Prize-winning “Gitanjali”.
Well, on 3rd June 1915, the British gave him the title “Sir”, making him a knight. But wait – this story has a twist!
When the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre happened in 1919 (we talked about it on 30th May!), Tagore was so heartbroken that he returned the title in protest.
👉 A real hero – who believed in honour more than honours!

🌍 1947 – The Great Divide: Partition Plan Announced
Now, for one of the most emotional pages in our history book. On 3rd June 1947, Lord Mountbatten, the last British Viceroy of India, announced the Partition Plan.
This meant our beloved India would be divided into two countries – India and Pakistan. While the idea was to stop violence between communities, it sadly led to the largest human migration in history – over 18 million people had to leave their homes, crossing borders with tears, hopes, and heartbreak.
👉 A tough time that shaped the India we live in today.
Here is the original speech by Lord Mountbatten…
🌟 What Can We Learn?
History is full of heroes, decisions, and turning points. The defeat of the Peshwas taught us about the rise of empires. Tagore’s knighthood (and his refusal to keep it) taught us about courage. And the Partition showed us the price of freedom and peace.
So, dear history detectives, always stay curious. Because every date on the calendar has a story waiting to be told!
Until our next time-travel adventure…
Stay curious. Stay brilliant!
