Explore the fascinating events of 4th June in history, from the first hot-air balloon flights and the first female balloonist to the invention of self-deodorizing fertilizer and the discovery of ancient animal fossils in North Carolina. A fun and educational read for children!
Hello young explorers! 👧👦
Today is 4th June, and we’re going on a little time-travel adventure to learn about some exciting events from history. Buckle up your imagination belts, because we’ll fly through the sky, dig up ancient fossils, and even talk about a self-deodorizing fertilizer (yes, you read that right!).
🎈 1783 – The Sky’s the Limit!
Imagine looking up into the sky and seeing something fly… but it’s not a bird, and definitely not a plane!
On 4th June , 1783, two clever brothers, Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier, launched the first-ever hot-air balloon flight in France. The balloon wasn’t carrying any people—just hot air and courage!
Made of silk and paper, their balloon soared 1,600 to 2,000 metres into the sky, staying up for 10 minutes and floating across 2 kilometres. The pilots were Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent d’Arlandes. This was the beginning of humans dreaming about flying!

👩🚀 1784 – Flying High, Madame Thible!
Only a year later, on 4th June, 1784, a brave lady named Marie Élisabeth Thible became the first woman to fly in a balloon!
A man was supposed to go up, but he got scared (it happens!), and so Marie Élisabeth took his place. She dressed like a goddess (seriously!) and even sang opera while flying. Now that’s what we call style in the sky!

💩 1850 – Fertilizer Without the Funk
Let’s talk… poop! On 4th June 1850, someone in England came up with a brilliant invention: self-deodorizing fertilizer.
That means farmers could grow crops using fertilizer that didn’t smell bad. It was a big step for agriculture—and for noses everywhere!

🐛 1975 – Fossils Older Than Dinosaurs?!
In 1975, something incredible was discovered in North Carolina, USA: the oldest animal fossils ever found in the country!
Scientists uncovered ancient worm-like creatures preserved in volcanic ash. These creatures lived more than 620 million years ago, even before dinosaurs or fish ever existed!
They were discovered by geologists and scientists from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Duke University, and the Smithsonian Institution. Who knew squishy sea worms could become such big stars in history?

🌍 What Can We Learn?
- Dream Big: The Montgolfier brothers looked at smoke rising from a fire and thought, “What if we could fly?”
- Be Brave: Marie Élisabeth didn’t let fear stop her from making history.
- Solve Problems: That smelly fertilizer? Someone fixed it!
- Stay Curious: Fossils remind us that the Earth has secrets hidden under every rock.
So, next time you see a balloon, smell fresh soil, or pick up a rock, remember—you’re standing on a planet full of stories waiting to be discovered!
Happy Exploring!
