The Wise Goldfish is a story by Dhriya Das, Class VI, about a clever goldfish named Goldy who uses her intelligence and quick thinking to escape from a fisherman, highlighting the power of wisdom and presence of mind.
There was a fish who was very clever and wise. No fisherman or anyone could ever catch it. But one day something unexpected happened. The goldfish was worried, thinking, what is the solution now? And what should I do? All the fishes in the river were shocked by the incident. They thought it was the end. But the most worried one was the goldfish.
Can you guys tell what the shocking incident was? Yes, you are correct—the wise goldfish was caught by a fisherman. But she did not give up; she was searching for ways to get out of the net. Then a fantastic idea took place in her brain. She had a superpower that she could stay alive for three hours even after coming out of the water. The wise fish started talking with the fisherman. The fisherman was shocked that how could a goldfish speak like humans.
Goldfish: Hello! I am Goldy the goldfish. You are such an intelligent person that you caught the goldfish whom nobody could catch.
Fisherman: Hello, I am Robin, a fisherman. But I am shocked—how can a fish speak like humans? Can you please explain to me, Goldy?
Wise Goldfish: Yes, of course. There is nothing to explain. It is because I am magical.
Fisherman: Oh, is this the reason that nobody can catch you?
Goldfish: I did not know that you are this foolish. How can speaking be the reason that I can be saved? It is nothing; I am just a clever and wise goldfish.
Fisherman: Oh, but can you even survive out of the water?
Goldfish: Yes, but there is a time limit. I can only survive three hours, not more than that. However, you are unlucky because…
Fisherman: What did I do? Why did you stop telling? Please let me know.
Goldfish: Then first tell me why you caught me. Is it a need or a purpose? First answer this question of mine. Then I will tell you.
Fisherman: On purpose. Now tell me, please!!
Goldfish: Oh my God! You will die!
Fisherman: But why?? Tell me!!
Goldfish: You take me back to my house or the river.
Fisherman: But why should I do that? I caught you, and now I want to take you to my house and show my wife. She loves goldfish.
Goldfish: If you do not take me to my house, you will die. I already told you. Why do you not understand?
Fisherman: But why will I die?
Goldfish: It has been one hour we are talking.
The goldfish and the fisherman were sitting under a tree because it was too hot, and the fisherman was very tired.
Goldfish: Because let me tell you the story of Mr. Max. Like you, one day a person named Mr. Max caught me, and before that I used to live in Dal Lake. But as I told you, when I was caught by Mr. Max, he did not believe that he would die. So he was on his way home, passing through this road. Then the time finished, I had a breathing problem, and he got a heart attack. At the last moment, he died, but he threw me into this river. But as the time had finished when he threw me, he died. Do you want the same, Robin?
Fisherman: No, obviously not. Who wants to die for a goldfish? And you are not made of gold that I can give my life.
Goldfish: So if you do not want to die, then leave me in the river. That is it.
Fisherman: How much time is left? Can you please tell?
Goldfish: Yes, why not? We have spent one hour talking, and a few minutes ago you started walking, so now most probably one hour and thirty minutes. So one hour and thirty minutes are left. Go quickly, run fast.
Unexpectedly, the fisherman believed the words of the goldfish. He ran as fast as he could.
Fisherman: Oof!! So tiring. Why could you not tell this to me before? Now I am so tired.
Goldfish: I told you, but you did not believe me. So what can I do?
Fisherman: You are correct. This is my fault only. You already warned me, but I was the one who did not believe you. I am sorry.
Goldfish: You do not have to apologize because nowadays everybody fools everyone. It is not your fault.
Fisherman: You are such a kind goldfish, Goldy.
Goldy the goldfish was really happy that the fisherman became fooled so easily. After that, they finally reached the river. Then he threw the fish into the river, and Goldy was very happy. Goldy had many friends like Pinky, Sommy, and Neony.
Pinky: How come you are back? Were you not caught by the fisherman?
Goldfish: Yes, I was. But by my wisdom, I saved myself.
Sommy: Wow! You are so clever, Goldy.
Neony: Yes, if we were there, we could not survive, and you also have magical powers, like staying alive for three hours even after going out of the water.
Goldy: Yes, I have those powers. But if you guys stay with me, you will not get the powers, but you can be wise like me.
Sommy, Pinky, Neony: We have no words to compliment you. (together)
Then they all lived happily in the river.
