Mikel Merino’s late winner lifts Spain to a 2-1 victory over Belgium in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinal, setting up a semifinal showdown with France.
Mikel Merino emerged as Spain’s unlikely hero, coming off the bench to score a dramatic late winner as La Roja defeated Belgium 2–1 in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinal on Friday (July 10). The victory secures Spain a place in the semifinals, where it will face France in Dallas on Tuesday (July 14).
Spain controlled much of the first half and deservedly took the lead in the 30th minute. Midfielder Fabián Ruiz reacted quickest after Belgium failed to deal with an initial effort, calmly slotting home the rebound to put his side ahead.
Belgium responded positively and restored parity four minutes before the interval. Charles De Ketelaere rose highest inside the penalty area to power a well-timed header beyond the Spanish goalkeeper, ensuring the teams went into halftime level at 1–1.
The second half was a closely contested affair, with both sides creating chances but failing to find the decisive breakthrough. As extra time loomed, Spain coach made a bold move by introducing Mikel Merino in the 86th minute.
The substitution proved inspired. Just two minutes after entering the field, Merino capitalised on a loose ball inside the Belgian penalty area and fired home the winner, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Spanish players and supporters.
The victory keeps Spain’s World Cup dream alive and sets up a mouth-watering semifinal clash against France, who booked their place in the last four with a victory over Morocco earlier on Friday.
