Read the complete Stranger Things Season 1 story, by Navika Ghosh, as Will Byers disappears and Mike, Dustin, and Lucas meet the mysterious girl known as Eleven in Hawkins.
It was November 6, 1983, in the quiet town of Hawkins, Indiana. Life seemed completely normal. Friends went to school together, families enjoyed peaceful evenings, and nothing unusual ever happened. But one ordinary night, everything changed.
Four best friends—Michael Wheeler, William Byers, Dustin Henderson, and Lucas Sinclair—were gathered in Michael’s basement, playing their favorite role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons. Michael, whom everyone called Mike, was the Dungeon Master. William, whom everyone called Will, played the role of a brave wizard. Dustin and Lucas carefully planned every move as the group fought a fierce imaginary monster called the Thessalhydra.
After a long and exciting game, Mike announced that the party had defeated the monster. The boys cheered happily, laughed together, and packed up their game. It was already late in the evening, so they said goodbye and headed home on their bicycles.
At the same time, something terrible was happening a few miles away at Hawkins National Laboratory. Warning alarms echoed throughout the building as frightened scientists ran through the hallways. During a secret government experiment, a mysterious gate to another dimension had been opened. From that gate, a horrifying creature escaped into the darkness before anyone could stop it.
Unaware of the danger, Will rode his bicycle through Mirkwood Forest, his usual shortcut home. As he entered the woods, he noticed something strange. The air suddenly became cold. The lights on his bicycle flickered on and off, and an eerie growling sound echoed through the trees.
Frightened, Will pedaled as fast as he could until he reached his house. His mother, Joyce Byers, was still at work, and his older brother, Jonathan Byers, had not yet returned home. The house was completely empty.
Will hurried inside and locked the front door. A moment later, the lights began flickering again. Looking outside, he saw a tall, terrifying creature standing in the darkness.
Panicking, Will ran to the backyard shed, grabbed a hunting rifle, and hid inside. He pointed the rifle toward the door as the creature slowly approached.
Suddenly, everything became silent.
The very next moment, Will disappeared without leaving a single trace.
The following morning, Joyce returned home expecting to find Will getting ready for school. Instead, she found his bed untouched. His bicycle was missing, and there was no sign of him anywhere. Terrified, she immediately called the Hawkins Police Department.
Chief Jim Hopper arrived and began investigating the disappearance. At first, he believed Will might have run away, but Joyce refused to accept that explanation. She knew her son would never leave home without telling her.
News of Will’s disappearance quickly spread throughout Hawkins. Volunteers searched the forests, roads, and nearby areas while police officers continued looking for clues.
Meanwhile, Mike, Dustin, and Lucas refused to give up hope. Determined to find their best friend, they decided to search the woods themselves.
As heavy rain fell around them, they discovered a frightened young girl walking alone through the forest. She had a shaved head, wore a hospital gown, and looked weak and scared. On her wrist was the tattoo “011.”
When Mike gently asked her name, she quietly replied,
“Eleven.”
Not knowing who she really was or where she had come from, the boys decided to help her.
Their decision would change all of their lives forever.
