Spain Held by Resilient Cape Verde in World Cup Opener
Spain were frustrated by a determined Cape Verde as the reigning European champions were held to a goalless draw in their opening Group H match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ranked second in the world, Spain were expected to comfortably overcome Cape Verde, the tournament’s third-smallest nation by population and 67th in the latest FIFA rankings. However, the African side produced a disciplined defensive display to earn a memorable point.
Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, 40, was the standout performer, making a series of outstanding saves to deny Spain throughout the contest. Ferran Torres came closest to breaking the deadlock before half-time, striking the crossbar after meeting Marc Cucurella’s header across goal.
Spain introduced teenage sensation Lamine Yamal in the second half for his first appearance in almost eight weeks following a hamstring injury. The Barcelona winger added urgency to Spain’s attack on his World Cup debut but was unable to find the decisive breakthrough.
Late in the game, Mikel Oyarzabal was denied by a brilliant goal-line block from Cape Verde defender Roberto Lopes, preserving the deadlock.
Cape Verde even threatened to snatch a famous victory in the closing stages, but defender Diney Borges headed a corner directly at Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón.
The result represents a significant achievement for Cape Verde, while Spain will be left searching for greater attacking fluency ahead of their remaining Group H fixtures.
