Shreejit Jha, a student of class 6 shares a report on the thrilling T20 World Cup final where India clinched victory against South Africa by 7 runs in Barbados.
In a nail-biting final held in Barbados, India clinched the T20 World Cup final by defeating South Africa by 7 runs, marking their first World Cup victory in 17 years. The match was a thrilling encounter, filled with dramatic moments and outstanding performances from both sides.
India won the toss and opted to bat first. The innings began with Rohit Sharma giving the strike to Virat Kohli, who wasted no time in showcasing his prowess. Kohli struck three consecutive fours in the very first over, giving India a dynamic start. Rohit managed to hit two boundaries but was soon dismissed for 9 runs, falling to Keshav Maharaj’s bowling with Heinrich Klaasen taking a stunning diving catch at deep long leg.
Rishabh Pant’s stay at the crease was short-lived as he was out for a duck in the same over. Suryakumar Yadav also failed to make an impact, departing for just 3 runs. This series of quick wickets put India in a precarious position.
Amidst the top-order collapse, Kohli remained calm and steady. Axar Patel, promoted up the order, formed a crucial partnership with Kohli, steering India out of trouble. Patel played a quick-fire innings, scoring 47 runs off 31 balls, including four sixes and a four, before his dismissal due to a lapse in concentration.
Following Patel’s departure, Shivam Dube contributed with some vital boundaries. Kohli continued his assault, using Kagiso Rabada’s pace to his advantage, hitting multiple fours and sixes. Kohli’s brilliant knock of 76 runs off 59 balls, featuring six fours and two sixes, was instrumental in stabilizing India’s innings. After Kohli’s dismissal, Dube and Hardik Pandya added quick runs, pushing India to a competitive total of 176 for 7. Maharaj and Anrich Nortje were the pick of the South African bowlers, claiming two wickets each.
South Africa’s chase began on a shaky note as Jasprit Bumrah struck early, dismissing Reeza Hendricks in his first over. Aiden Markram hit a boundary but was soon out, caught by Arshdeep Singh. Tristan Stubbs and Quinton de Kock attempted to counterattack, but Axar Patel broke their partnership by removing Stubbs. Klaasen then joined de Kock and the duo started to dominate the Indian bowlers. However, Klaasen’s attempt to hit a six ended with a catch at the boundary by Kuldeep Yadav off Arshdeep Singh’s bowling. De Kock contributed 39 runs before falling.
Klaasen, along with David Miller, continued to pressure the Indian bowlers, hitting several sixes. With 29 runs needed off 29 balls, South Africa appeared to be in a strong position. However, Pant cleverly used a break for physiotherapy to disrupt Klaasen’s rhythm, and Hardik Pandya dismissed him soon after. Bumrah then bowled out Marco Jansen, leaving South Africa in trouble.
In the final over, South Africa needed 16 runs off 6 balls with Hardik Pandya bowling. Miller, known for his finishing skills, aimed for a six but was caught brilliantly by Suryakumar Yadav at the boundary. Rabada managed to hit a four, but South Africa required 9 runs off the last ball, which proved too much.
India’s victory was sealed, and the team erupted in joy as they lifted the T20 World Cup final, their first ICC trophy in 11 years. Rohit Sharma’s captaincy and Virat Kohli’s exceptional performance were pivotal in India’s historic win, bringing the T20 World Cup final trophy back to India after a 17-year wait.
Lets hope the Indian Cricket Team can come up with such marvelous performance in future and bring back more trophies for our country.
