Scotland lost 1-0 to Morocco after an early goal in the FIFA World Cup 2026, while Brazil beat Haiti 3-0 to strengthen their Group C knockout hopes.
Scotland Fall Narrowly to Morocco but Knockout Dream Remains Alive
Scotland suffered a 1-0 defeat to Morocco in their second Group C match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after conceding within the opening 70 seconds, but Steve Clarke’s side still have their destiny firmly in their own hands as they chase a historic place in the knockout stages.
The Scots endured the worst possible start at Boston Stadium when defensive hesitation allowed Morocco’s Ismael Saibari to race through and fire home a superb finish inside two minutes. The early strike proved decisive as the Africa Cup of Nations champions and one of the tournament favourites showcased their quality throughout the contest.
Manager Steve Clarke had reshuffled his side following the victory over Haiti, deploying Kieran Tierney on the left side of midfield in an attempt to limit the influence of Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi. However, the tactical plan unravelled almost immediately as Grant Hanley and Jack Hendry failed to deal with Saibari’s run, gifting the Moroccan midfielder the opportunity to score.
Despite Morocco dominating possession and creating the better chances, Scotland gradually worked their way back into the match. John McGinn came closest before half-time but sliced his effort wide from close range after arriving unmarked at the far post.
The Scots showed greater urgency after the interval and twice appealed unsuccessfully for penalties. McGinn believed he had been fouled inside the area before Scott McTominay also went to ground under pressure, but referee Ilgiz Tantashev waved away both claims.
Scotland remained in the contest thanks to a crucial last-ditch block from Hendry and an outstanding reflex save by goalkeeper Angus Gunn to deny Bilal El Khannouss. At the other end, Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was rarely tested, although McTominay came agonisingly close when his deflected effort struck the side-netting, while substitute Lyndon Dykes headed narrowly wide late in the game.
Although the defeat ended Scotland’s hopes of securing early qualification, their chances of reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time remain alive. Clarke’s men will now turn their attention to a decisive final Group C encounter against Brazil on Wednesday, knowing a positive result could secure a place in the last 16.
Brazil Cruise Past Haiti as Cunha Double Seals Knockout Hopes
Brazil returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion, defeating Haiti 3-0 in Philadelphia to move top of Group C and leave their opponents as the first team eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Forward Matheus Cunha starred with a first-half brace, opening the scoring in the 23rd minute after a fortunate deflection before adding a superb second following an incisive pass from Vinicius Jr. Vinicius then capped an impressive display by scoring Brazil’s third in first-half stoppage time after being set up by Lucas Paqueta.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side produced a much-improved performance following criticism of their opening draw against Morocco, though the victory was tempered by an injury to winger Raphinha, who was forced off before half-time.
Goalkeeper Alisson preserved Brazil’s clean sheet with an excellent second-half save, while teenager Endrick had a late goal ruled out for offside on his World Cup debut.
The defeat confirms Haiti’s elimination from the tournament, as they are guaranteed to finish bottom of Group C with one match remaining.
