Qatar drew 1-1 with Switzerland after a late equaliser, while Brazil were held 1-1 by Morocco in an exciting FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage action.
World Cup 2026: Qatar Hold Switzerland to Dramatic Draw
Qatar produced a spirited late comeback to earn a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 Group D match on Saturday, 13 June. Boualem Khoukhi scored a dramatic late equaliser to rescue a point for the Gulf nation.
Playing in only their second FIFA World Cup after hosting the 2022 edition, Qatar appeared short of match practice, having played just three matches since December after two warm-up friendlies were cancelled due to the conflict in the Middle East. Despite being outplayed for much of the contest, they capitalised on a late opportunity to deny Switzerland victory.
Switzerland dominated possession and created the better chances but failed to put the game beyond Qatar’s reach. The result will be a concern for Swiss coach Murat Yakin, whose side is aiming to reach the World Cup knockout stage for a fourth successive tournament.
The day’s World Cup schedule also features Brazil taking on Morocco and Haiti facing Scotland in Group C, while Australia meet Türkiye in Group D. Later in the night, Germany will begin their Group E campaign against Curaçao.
Brazil Held to 1-1 Draw by Resilient Morocco in World Cup Opener
Brazil were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Morocco in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 match after a spirited performance from the Atlas Lions. Morocco took the lead in the 21st minute when Ismael Saibari finished calmly after being set up by Brahim Diaz.
Brazil responded before half-time through a superb solo effort from Vinicius Junior, who curled a fine strike into the top corner after a clever one-two with Bruno Guimaraes. Both teams created chances in an entertaining second half, with goalkeepers Yassine Bounou and Alisson Becker making crucial saves to preserve the scoreline.
Despite dominating possession for long periods, Brazil were unable to find a winner, while Morocco earned a valuable point against one of the tournament favourites, underlining their growing reputation on the world stage.
