An exciting story by Shibangi Mitra, Class VI, Epic Public School. It follows Jenny, a fifth-grader at St. Cadaver School, who discovers she can read minds after opening a mysterious fortune cookie—leading her to uncover a dangerous secret about her mysterious classmate, Ruskin.
Jenny was a student of 5th grade in St. Cadaver School, USA. One day encouraged by her friend Angelina she bought a fortune cookie. It said it could read minds. She did not put too much thought into what her fortune cookie had said, until it started to come true.
After two days to check that power of the cookie she told her friend Angelina to think of a colour in her mind. Instantly she could feel something strange as if some powers has come within her, and she could read her friend’s mind. Magically the word ‘red’ come out from her mouth.
A surprised Angelina replied “Ye…ye….yes it is red, you are absolutely correct”.
She felt it was just another case of coincidence. So she asked her friend to think of a name. And almost instantly she said, “Zico, isn’t it?”
Angelina was speechless for a while, then she said “it is …it is …it is correct. But how on earth can you read my mind?”
She too was confused, she said “Well, I really don’t know.”
“What was written in your fortune cookie?” Angelina asked.
“Well, I think it was ‘mind reading’.” She replied.
“Yes, now I know you. See you have got powers, hello super Jenny.” Angeline mocked.
“Oh please shut up. I just guessed it is just a coincidence I guess, what is so special about it?” Jenny was confident.
“Whatever it is, it is quite interesting, bye-bye for now I am going to home.” Angelina aid and turned to go away.
“Have a nice day.” her friend wished.
That day after reaching home, Jenny decided to use her superpowers, the next day when she reaches school.
So the next day during the first period, she had this strange feeling that they were headed for a surprise test in the class. She told her friends at once about it. Needless to say her friends did not believe her. But then as the teacher arrived, she declared to the students that a surprise test was going to be held.
She was shocked but then she ignored it to be just another wild guess. But somewhere she felt she should try to experiment further. She decided to use her new found power upon her friend Ruskin.
Ruskin was a very shy person and never spoke much to anyone, as if he is hiding something from others. She approached Ruskin and asked, “Ruskin what’s your age?”
She could read his mind that said ‘I am 18 years old, but I can’t tell her that.’
She was shocked, she asked again “What do you do?”
Again she could read his mind that said, ‘I am a serial killer.’ But Ruskin’s words broke her thoughts, he said “What nonsense are you talking about.” Saying this he left.
Jenny was feeling suspicious, so she decided to follow him. Soon following Ruskin, Jenny found that he lives in a scary old mansion. And as he went to the washroom, Jenny entered the house and suddenly to her surprise she saw an old man. It seemed that he was Ruskin’s father. The man said, “Hello little girl what are you doing here?” Jenny startled started running, but the old man started running behind her.
“Hey girl don’t come here again, otherwise I will kill you.” He shouted.
Jenny was too scared she started running as fast as possible, and soon reached Angelina’s house. She narrated the entire incident to her friend.
Angelina didn’t believe Jenny, but she promised to go with Jenny again to the old mansion. Once they reached the mansion Angelina found that Jenny was speaking the truth. Suddenly a man came out of the house and trapped Angelina inside. Angelina shouted, “Oh! My best friend Jenny, I will give you my I-Pad lunch money, video games, everything if you save me.”
Jenny thought of a plan in her mind. She thought of Edward in the movie twilight. She told “Hay Ruskin’s father, then catch me if you can.” Ruskin’s father ran fast and finally caught Jenny.
“What did you think I cannot run?” roared Riskin’s father. He tied Jenny’s hands naturally little Jenny was very scared. She read his mind and realized his next move. He was going to kill Jenny.
“Don’t you dare to kill me.” Jenny replied.
“Wait. How do you know this?” asked the old man.
As Angelina’s hands were not tied, she untied Jenny’s hands and saved her. They ran out of the house and called the police.
Police caught him after few years in India. Why India? Because he somehow managed to escae from that house that day. But Ruskin is still not caught by the police. Some people say he is seen in Singapore, some say in Japan. God knows where Ruskin is, dead or alive, fine or unwell.
So next time you see a young boy named Ruskin, just be careful as he is still there somewhere.
