Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the FIFA World Cup opener while South Korea came from behind to beat Czech Republic 2-1 in a thrilling group-stage action.
Mexico End Opening Match Hoodoo with 2–0 Victory Over South Africa
Co-hosts Mexico began their FIFA World Cup campaign in style, defeating South Africa 2–0 at the Estadio Azteca to register their first-ever victory in a World Cup opening match after seven previous unsuccessful attempts.
Julián Quiñones gave Mexico the perfect start in the ninth minute, capitalising on a defensive error by Sphephelo Sithole to slot the ball through goalkeeper Ronwen Williams’ legs. Mexico continued to dominate, with Quiñones later striking the post before half-time.
South Africa’s hopes faded early in the second half when Sithole was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity. Mexico doubled their advantage midway through the half as Raúl Jiménez headed home a cross from Roberto Alvarado.
The match ended in dramatic fashion with three red cards. South Africa substitute Themba Zwane was dismissed following a VAR review for violent conduct, while Mexico’s Cesar Montes also received a red card in stoppage time for a late challenge.
The convincing victory gives Mexico an ideal start to their World Cup campaign, while South Africa face an uphill task after a disappointing and ill-disciplined performance.
South Korea Come From Behind to Beat Czech Republic 2-1
South Korea fought back from a goal down to secure a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in their FIFA World Cup group-stage opener. Despite creating several chances, captain Son Heung-min was unable to find the net before Czech skipper Ladislav Krejčí gave his side the lead with a header from a long throw in the 59th minute.
The Koreans responded quickly, with Hwang In-beom delicately lifting the equaliser over the goalkeeper in the 67th minute. The Czech Republic thought they had regained the advantage through Tomáš Souček, but his header was ruled out for offside. Moments later, Hwang turned provider, setting up Oh Hyeon-gyu to score the winner from close range.
Following the result, co-hosts Mexico lead the group after their 2-0 victory over South Africa. South Korea will face Mexico in Guadalajara next Thursday, while the Czech Republic take on South Africa in Atlanta.
