Ecuador fought back from an early deficit to beat Germany 2-1, secure a place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage and keep alive hopes of a deep run.
Ecuador Stun Germany to Reach World Cup Knockout Stage
New Jersey: Ecuador produced a spirited comeback to defeat Germany 2–1 and book their place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage, keeping alive hopes of a memorable campaign. The victory sets up a potential last-16 clash with England.
Having failed to score in their opening two Group E matches—a goalless draw against Curaçao and a defeat to Ivory Coast—Ecuador entered the contest under immense pressure. Germany, meanwhile, had already secured top spot in the group and appeared to be in complete control after taking an early lead.
The Germans struck in just the second minute when Florian Wirtz threaded a superb pass into the penalty area for Leroy Sané, who calmly slotted the ball past Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez.
Ecuador, however, were left incensed moments before the goal as they believed they should have been awarded a free-kick following a high boot from Aleksandar Pavlović on Pedro Vite. Their appeals were waved away by the referee, a decision that seemed to galvanise the South American side.
Roared on by a sea of yellow-clad supporters, they responded with determination and drew level just seven minutes later. Sunderland winger Nilson Angulo finished confidently with a low strike beyond Manuel Neuer to restore parity.
The second half saw the team continue to dictate the tempo, while Germany struggled to find their rhythm. Their persistence was rewarded in the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest to a corner, beating Neuer to the loose ball to score the decisive goal and spark jubilant celebrations among the Ecuadorian fans.
The dramatic victory sends the country through to the knockout stages in remarkable fashion after a difficult start to the tournament. Germany, despite the defeat, advance as Group E winners.
The outcome also deals a significant blow to Scotland’s hopes of progressing, as Ecuador’s victory reduces the Scots’ chances of qualifying as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
