Sayantani Das from Class 5, Epic Public School, shares this report which is an adoption of an article in BBC where she highlights the rising concern of obesity in India, particularly abdominal obesity or pot belly.
Indian Pot Belly were made fun of for a long time. Many people were mocked as elephants. But this harmless pot belly is causing a huge sense of concern all over the world. Even children are getting effected. This is called Obesity.
There are two types of obesity, abdominal and general. India happens to have the second largest number of pot bellies. Over 180 million were effected by 2021. A new Lencet study informs that by 2050 India might be having 450 million obese people.
Now one may ask what is the problem in obesity. To tell you the fact an obese person is at a higher risk to be effected by Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
So why is belly fat a problem?
Insulin is one of the major factors behind belly fat. Insulin is generated in our body by pancreas. Insulin resistance is a situation when our body stops responding to insulin. Abdominal fat disrupts how the body uses insulin, making it harder to control blood sugar.
Some studies have found South Asians, including Indians, tend to have more body fat than white Caucasians at the same Body Mass Index.
So wake up fellow countrymen, start exercising and making yourself fit and let us prove that even India can and India will.
