A narrative by Gunjita Das when she encounters a snake in her house. From her fear of cockroaches to facing her worst nightmare, this true story captures the raw panic, courage, and lasting impact of an unexpected visitor.
Hey! I am Gunjita, and I’m a little cracked.
I’m ashamed to admit it, but I’m scared of little insects like grasshoppers, earthworms, and my biggest enemy—the COCKROACH COMMUNITY. I just HATE them.
Someone who is scared of these tiny yet gigantic creatures would definitely be terrified of a whole SNAKE. I mean, who isn’t scared of a snake?
It had been years since I’d glimpsed one. I had almost forgotten something like that even existed. But the Almighty didn’t want me to—and decided to remind me once again.
Basically, this was one of my worst experiences.
Around 11:00 p.m., I was studying because my exams were knocking at the door. Mom was in the living room, relaxing after a hectic day. My grandma had already gone to bed.
As I was struggling to grasp the exact meaning of “synthesis,” and growing more impatient with no urge left to study Biology, I heard the sound of something falling. When I peeked through the slightly opened door of my room, I saw something moving. At first glance, I thought it was another cockroach. But when I looked again to be sure, I saw a big, long snake slithering around.
A cold shiver ran through my body at that very moment. I was speechless. I didn’t even have the courage to call my mom.
Somehow, I managed to gather enough courage to call her, and when she saw it, she was literally shocked. We didn’t even have the number of a rescue team, and we had to get it out somehow.
Mom quickly called my grandma, and they both started trying to get it out of the house. Mom asked me to close the door of my room, and I did as she said. I closed my book because I COULDN’T focus anymore.
I could hear them trying to drive it away—Mom asking Grandma to bring some diluted phenyl. She brought it, and Mom started spraying it behind the almirah. After an hour of struggle, it finally showed up. Mom kept poking it to make it come out, but it wouldn’t budge.
After some time, it finally emerged. The smell of phenyl must have annoyed the snake, and it tried to come into my room! Though the door was closed, I could see its tongue flicking in under the gap—and that was enough to make me jump to the farthest corner of my bed.
Another hour passed, but the snake still wouldn’t go away. We didn’t want to harm it, but there was no other way left. Of course, we couldn’t let it stay inside the house. With a lot of guilt, we had to end its life.
We were deeply saddened, but there was no other choice.
This was one of the most tragic incidents that has ever taken place in MY LIFE.
The next two or three days were horrific. I couldn’t even walk past that room! And my very own room is just next to it. I am still scared of that room—and honestly, the whole house.
Be careful, fellows!
Lots of Love—LOL
