Resmi Banu, Class 6, Epic Public School, shares the inspiring story of Zarah Pater, a girl born without superpowers in the magical Kunfu dynasty. This story was edited by Prarona Karmakar.
In the 1500s, there was an Egyptian kingdom named the Kunfu dynasty. It was a hidden city where everybody had superpowers. But Zarah discovered that she was the only one who was unique, without any superpower.
Let me give you a flashback to the whole incident!
In the huge kingdom of Kunfu, a baby girl was born. She was named Zarah Pater. She was so beautiful that everyone came to see her. She was a fair-skinned, sweet girl.
Her mother looked at her and could not help but say, “My little baby, you are just one month old, but one day you will grow up and gain a superpower like all of us.”
She grew up playing and learning new things every day, and soon five years had passed.
Her mother looked at her in awe and said to her father, “I am so amazed by the fact that our daughter will turn eighteen after thirteen more years, and then she will gain her superpower.”
The kingdom of Kunfu had been blessed by an old lady many years ago, who declared that anyone born in this land would gain superpowers when they reached the age of eighteen. Since then, the kingdom had been full of magic.
That day, after she returned from school, she was quite restless. She wanted her superpower. She went to her room, locked it, and started thinking about when she would get her power. She was so uneasy that she started feeling sick. She screamed, “Mummy!”
Her father, Mr. Pater, had the superpower to break anything. He used it to unlock the closed door of his daughter’s room. They entered and found Zarah restless. Her mother was concerned and asked, “Honey, what happened? Why did you shout?”
Zarah asked impatiently, “When will I gain my superpower? I can’t stay patient anymore!”
Mr. Pater said, “Don’t you worry, Zarah. You will gain your power as soon as you turn eighteen.”
In this way, thirteen years went by, and it was time to celebrate Zarah’s eighteenth birthday.
Zarah was on cloud nine as soon as she woke up. She ran to her mother in the kitchen and asked, “Mumma, when will I gain my superpower?”
Her mother smiled and said, “Have patience, my dear. You will get it very soon!”
In the evening, everybody gathered in the living room for Zarah’s birthday celebration. Her grandfather brought the cake, placed it on the table, and said, “Hey lady, give my granddaughter her superpower.” But nothing happened. It left everyone’s jaw dropping, because what happened that day had not happened in years.
Everyone present said, “Zarah, you are useless, you are good for nothing.” And moreover, her best friend Agaro felt the same way the others did. That day she saw how evil everyone was, but she could do nothing.
Zarah left the kingdom of Kunfu that night and walked toward the unknown. As she walked aimlessly, the sun bid goodbye and the moon shone brightly in the sky.
Zarah was feeling thirsty. When she looked around, she saw a house nearby. She approached and knocked on the door. A lady opened it, and Zarah saw that the family were having their dinner.
The family seemed to be middle class and happy. Zarah said, “Aunty, I am very thirsty. Could you please give me some water?”
The kind lady said, “Come in, girl, while I fetch some water for you.”
The man sitting on the other side of the table asked, “Who are you, my dear, and what brings you here?”
“I am Zarah Pater. I am from the Kunfu dynasty.”
The lady gave her a glass of water and said, “Oh, that means you are the little queen! But why did you leave the royal kingdom?”
Zarah drank the water quickly and said, “I left because I didn’t gain any special power, even on my eighteenth birthday, and everyone was mocking me. I was so unhappy that I decided to leave.”
The kind family asked Zarah to stay with them, and after a few months, they adopted her. Thus, days turned to months and months to years.
Meanwhile, in the kingdom of Kunfu, almost everybody had forgotten about Zarah, until one day…
A luxurious car reached the kingdom of Kunfu, and inside was a famous doctor who had gained a high reputation over the years. Everyone was shocked, not just because such a popular doctor was visiting, but even more because the doctor was none other than Zarah, Zarah Pater—the same girl who was once criticised by them for having no power.
That day, Agaro and the rest of the kingdom learned a lesson—a lesson that no one is useless, and everyone should be respected for who they are.
